Dr. Nita Byack George Hails Gov. Uba Sani’s Gender-Inclusive Governance at National Women’s Conference

By Adonma Agebe

Hon. (Dr.) Nita Byack George, a renowned administrator and advocate for women’s empowerment, has applauded the Kaduna State Government under the leadership of Governor Uba Sani for its remarkable commitment to gender inclusivity.

Her commendation followed the state’s recent recognition at the 9th Voice of Women Conference and Awards (VOW2025) held in Abuja, where the Kaduna State Public Procurement Authority (KADPPA) won the award for “The Government Agency Supporting Women and Their Families.”

Dr. George described the honour as “a remarkable testament to visionary leadership and progressive policy.”

“I am thrilled to congratulate the Kaduna State Government under the able leadership of His Excellency, Senator (Dr.) Uba Sani, CON. This award is not just a recognition of KADPPA’s work, but a validation of the state’s unwavering commitment to gender equality and inclusion,” she stated.

Dr. George, who served as the immediate past Administrator of Jaba Local Government Area and attended the event as a Special Guest, noted that the award was evidence of Kaduna’s deliberate efforts to translate gender-inclusive policies into tangible outcomes.

“As someone who has dedicated years to advocating for women’s health, empowerment, and leadership inclusion at both national and international levels, I am heartened to see the real impact of deliberate, gender-responsive governance,” she added.

Highlighting key achievements under Governor Uba Sani’s administration, she cited the recently approved Women Affirmative Procurement Policy by the Kaduna State Executive Council and the establishment of a Gender Responsive Department and Desk at KADPPA under the leadership of its Director-General, Engr. Sanusi A. Yero.

“These initiatives show that Kaduna is not just talking about inclusivity—it is institutionalising it. Governor Uba Sani’s administration is setting a model for others across Nigeria to emulate,” she remarked.

Dr. George also commended the governor’s broader advocacy for women’s political participation, especially his support for the Reserved Seat for Women Bill currently gaining traction at the National Assembly.

“I must commend Governor Uba Sani’s leadership and vision for championing gender-sensitive policies, especially the Reserved Seat for Women Bill. I am proud to be part of a network of advocates working tirelessly to ensure the passage of this bill, which will undoubtedly increase women’s representation in politics and decision-making positions,” she said.

In addition, Dr. George lauded the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for its commitment to promoting inclusivity and supporting women’s advancement.

“The current administration has shown a strong resolve to promote inclusivity. I am honoured to be a part of this journey, working alongside like-minded individuals, governments, and partners such as the Ministry of Women Affairs, UN Women, the League of Women Voters, and Voice of Women Radio to create a more equitable society,” she commended.

She further praised the National Assembly leadership, describing their ongoing efforts toward the women’s reserved seat bill as “historic.”

“I wish to commend the Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas (GCON)-led House of Representatives and the Sen. Godswill Akpabio (GCON)-led Senate for their immeasurable commitment to ensuring that the Reserved Seat for Women Bill gains Presidential assent and full implementation. I am optimistic that equal political representation will soon become a conquered struggle in Nigeria,” she affirmed.

Dr. George called for continued collaboration between government institutions and civil society organisations to sustain the momentum in gender advocacy.

“Congratulations to the Kaduna State Government and KADPPA on this well-deserved recognition. Let us continue to work together to build a brighter future for women and girls in Kaduna State, Nigeria, and beyond,” she concluded.

Unsung Heroes of the Oil Economy: Petrol Station Workers Cry Out Over Poor Pay and Harsh Conditions

By Mada Ibrahim

As the crisis in Nigeria’s petroleum industry deepens with the faceoff between Dangote Refinery and key industry unions such as PENGASSAN and NUPENG dominating headlines, a quieter but more painful struggle is unfolding across the country’s filling stations.

From cities to remote villages, petrol station workers, the last link between fuel and consumers, say they are “dying in silence,” trapped in a cycle of neglect, exploitation, and silence.

Under the banner of the Concerned Petrol Station Workers (CPSWs), the group, in a press statement by Comrade Ibrahim Zango, on October 5, 2025, lamented the poor working conditions, meagre wages, and abuse they endure daily.

“We are the ones who stand under the scorching sun and in the rain to serve millions every day, yet we are treated as if our lives don’t matter.

“We are dying in silence for fear of being molested or frustrated for raising our voices, even when we are like the engine room of Nigerian petroleum sector,” he added.

Despite being vital to Nigeria’s petroleum distribution system, the workers said they remain among the most underpaid and undervalued groups in the country’s labour force.

Many, they claimed, earn as little as N20,000 to N30,000 monthly, far below the national cost of living.

“How do you survive on N20,000 in today’s Nigeria? We don’t even get allowances or medical support. If you complain, you risk losing your job,” one attendant decried.

According to the statement, petrol station workers are routinely forced to pay for fuel shortages caused by faulty pumps or accounting discrepancies beyond their control.

In addition, they face daily exposure to toxic fumes, robbery attacks, and other workplace hazards, often without protective gear or insurance, Zango said.

“When there’s a fire outbreak, robbery, or accident, the owners disappear, and the attendants are left to suffer. We are the unsung heroes of Nigeria’s oil economy,” he said.

The group also accused some station owners of silencing workers who attempt to unionise or demand fair treatment, using intimidation and physical harassment to suppress activism.

“Even the law doesn’t seem to protect us. We can’t form unions, and NUPENG has not organized us effectively. We are just on our own,” another worker claimed.

The CPSWs called on the Federal Government, the Ministry of Labour and Employment, and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to intervene and ensure that petrol station workers are included in ongoing discussions on petroleum sector reforms.

Their demands include fair wages commensurate with their role in the fuel distribution chain, improved working conditions including rest breaks, safety gear, and regulated shifts, and union protection to freely organise without intimidation.

Others are health and safety measures to mitigate occupational hazards, immediate action by NUPENG to organise effective leadership for petrol station workers at all levels.

“Petrol station workers are not invisible. We are not expendable. We are Nigerians who keep the economy running, often at the expense of our own health and dignity.

“Our voices must no longer be silenced. Our cry must no longer go unheard. It is time to recognise, respect, and uplift the frontline workers of the petroleum sector,” Zango said.

As the nation grapples with the high cost of fuel and instability in the petroleum market, the plight of petrol station workers adds a stark human face to Nigeria’s deepening oil-sector woes.

PRESS RESPONSE TO MUSA TANIMU NASIDI AND ‘LOKOJA CONSULTATIVE FORUM’ BY NINIJI NUPE DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION, KADUNA BRANCH.

Being Native Nupe of Lokoja, our attention has been drawn to a publication with the caption – “DISCLAIMER TO EMMANUEL DAUDA SHELIKA” written and signed by one Musa Tanimu Nasidi, a descendant of one of the Hausa settlers in Lokoja, (now an indigene by virtue of his birth and length of stay in Lokoja but yet, not a Native) who designated himself as the Director Media and Publicity, Lokoja Consultative Forum, published on the 8th day of June, 2025, by his Online Media Blog – ‘The Analyst’ and circulated on the Social Media.

The publication which is not only loaded with falsehood, but mischievous, malicious, defamatory, misleading and capable of disturbing the peace, also betrayed him the writer, his Consultative Forum, their Principal/sponsors, of their venom, the arson committed, the continuous harassments, intimidation, assault and threat to life and property which was vented on HRH Emmanuel Akamisoko Dauda Shelika – Nyamkpa IV, The Etsu Lokoja and the Native Nupe of Lokoja when his premises and Palace was trespassed and his car burnt beyond redemption in the early hours of Saturday, 21 December, 2024 and still on rampage as culpable. An attack the ‘A’ Division of the Lokoja Area Command of the Nigeria Police Force, Kogi State Command is still investigating.
Mr. Musa Tanimu Nasidi claimed that HRH Emmanuel Akamisoko Dauda Shelika – Nyamkpa IV, The Etsu Lokoja, has been evading arrest. It is not clear what type of arrest he means because His Royal Highness is not a lawbreaker neither are we his Nupe Native subjects. Moreover, he is not an enemy of the State, nor of the Nigeria Police. In fact, on our part we have done and continues to do everything in our power to avoid any face-off with anyone that could lead to any breach of the peace not because our aggressors have any monopoly.

However, we wish to hereby, call on the Government under the able leadership of His Excellency Alh. Ahmed Usman Ododo and our very dutiful Security Agencies to please, call Mr. Musa Tanimu Nasidi, his Lokoja Consultative Forum and their agents, his Principal and their sponsors for clarification and also hold them responsible for any form of disruption of the peace in Lokoja as well as any further threat to life or property either directly or indirectly by any form of assault or harm to HRH Emmanuel Akamisoko Dauda Shelika – Nyamkpa IV,

The Etsu Lokoja, members of his family or their properties as well as any member of the Native Nupe of Lokoja, members of their families or their properties or any Journalist or Media group (several of who have received threats anytime they publish our true and harmless stories), members of their families or their properties.
Let it be clear that HRH Emmanuel Akamisoko Dauda Shelika, Nyamkpa IV,

The Etsu Lokoja is not an imposter as claimed by Mr Tanimu Nasidi and his Lokoja Consultative Forum. His Royal Highness is a bonafide native of Lokoja, born right on Mount Pati, the original site of Lokoja to Majiyebo the son of Kabo, the son of Akpara, the son of Nyamkpa who was the founder and first Native Etsu Lokoja.

His Royal Highness Emmanuel Akamisoko Dauda Shelika Nyamkpa IV was duly nominated after wide consultations among the Native Nupe of Lokoja (home and in the Diaspora) and was culturally and traditionally installed on the 23rd day of January, 2024 on our ancestral foothold up on Mount Pati, the original site of Lokoja where our Etsus are naturally and culturally installed after due traditional rites by those whose traditional duty it is to install the Etsu Lokoja.

A public reenactment of that installation was held there on the same Mount Pati on the 27th day of July, 2024 ceremonially, with another cultural celebration of the Etsu Lokoja on the 31st day of August, 2024. These events were not held in secret.

By his installation, HRH Emmanuel Akamisoko Dauda Shelika Nyamkpa IV is the custodian of both the customary, traditional and cultural instruments as well as the ancient sacred sites of the Native Nupe of Lokoja on Mount Pati, the original site of Lokoja.

After his installation, Letters to the effect were sent to The then Governor, His Excellency Alh. Yahaya Adoza Bello on the 11th day of January, 2024 and to the Hon. Commissioner, Kogi State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs on the 15th day of January, 2024, rightly informing the Government of our actions and legitimately requesting for Government recognition and the grading of our age long Stool –

The ‘Etsu Lokoja’, being the earliest and oldest Stool as far as Lokoja is concerned. The letter to the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs was copied to the Lokoja Local Government Chairman, the Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Police Command, the Director, Department of State Services (DSS), Kogi State Command, the Commandant, Kogi State Command, Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corp, the Kogi State House of Assembly and the Secretary to the State Government. So, the Government of Kogi State and the Security Agencies are not ignorant of our existence.
Upon the change in administration, we the Native Nupe of Lokoja followed up with a reminder letter to the present Governor of Kogi State, His Excellency Alh. Ahmed Usman Ododo, the Hon. Commissioner, Kogi State Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and the Lokoja Local Government Council Chairman on the 11th day of November, 2024, (citing the event of the reenactment ceremonies of July and August, held on Mount Pati as well as passionately appealed for Government action to our request for Government recognition, the grading of our Stool as well as Government Appointment to our installed Etsu Lokoja for equity, fairness, justice and balance since other ethnic groups like the Igala, the Ebira, the Yoruba, the Ibo and the Hausa have Government recognition and graded Stools in Lokoja while the Natives Nupe are yet to have. Copies of the letter to His Excellency / Hon. Commissioner to the Kogi State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs was also copied to Government Security Agencies for their information and attention.
In the same vein, when HRH Emmanuel Akamisoko Dauda Shelika – Nyamkpa IV, The Etsu Lokoja was attacked and arson committed against him, which was an assault against us, the Native Nupe of Lokoja, we petitioned His Excellency, Alh. Ahmed Usman Ododo on the 31st day of December, 2024 rather than take laws into our hands through our Sociocultural Organization – Nupe Natives of Lokoja Development Union, requesting his intervention and to bring the perpetrators of the dastardly act of arson and threat to life and property to book as well as grant us the necessary Government recognition and the grading of our Stool to forestall any further/future attacks.

It is important to state at this point that what is today known as Lokoja Traditional Council, is a creation of the Colonial British Lords, undermining the Natives and their existing traditional authority which were on ground before their arrival in their scheme to dispossess the Natives of their land and to usurp authority over their resources.

They appointed whosoever they wish through their agent, Bishop Samuel Ajayi Crowther and the Church Missionary Society (CMS) and to give their action some pseudo legitimacy, they present their appointees who are not Natives of Lokoja to the Etsu Nupe in Bida for his blessing.

Nevertheless, the Native Nupe of Lokoja have continued to kick relentlessly over the years, regardless of the oppression, marginalization and exclusion from the affairs of the governance of our homeland as if we do not exist. We are not felons as Musa Tanimu Nasidi claimed.

The Native Nupe of Lokoja are a distinct host ethnic group being the earliest inhabitants of the ancient Community called Lokoja. We are not subservient to any other as far as Lokoja is concerned. While we are not in contention with the Lokoja Traditional Council (who are an extension and beneficiaries of the Colonial scheme), as Natives and not just indigenes, a distinct people with history, we have our right to exist, right to associate among ourselves and with whosoever we wish to. We have right to assemble and to express ourselves as well as right to promote our culture so long as we are not disorderly or breaching public peace.

We have right to choose our leader, install same and present him to Government for recognition and appointment without any form of approval of a none-native group.

We have right to set up our own administrative organs as well as the right to ask to be included in the affairs of governance in our homeland and to particularly demand for the good interests of our own people like every other ethnic group in the land does.

We therefore, plead with Government and our Security Agencies to help us uphold and protect these rights among others.
In the same vein, we continue to appeal to His Excellency, Alh. Ahmed Usman Ododo to graciously grant our humble and passionate request for Government recognition, the grading of our Stool and the appointment of our installed Etsu Lokoja to forestall any further harassments, intimidation, marginalization and the unjustifiable exclusion from strategic government activities in Lokoja. We object to every systematic scheme aimed at pushing our people into extinction by whatever means.

We also wish to appeal to our dutiful Security Agencies to fish out the perpetrators of the arson committed against our Etsu Lokoja in December, 2024. It is already over six months already without any visible action or word from the authorities. This could embolden evil doers to continue to hatch their evil acts.

In the face of all of the provocations though, we, the Native Nupe of Lokoja have continued to appeal to ourselves to remain calm as we are optimistic that the impartial and peace loving Government of His Excellency Alh. Ahmed Usman Ododo, who has zero tolerance for oppression and marginalization will grant our request by the grace of the Almighty God.
May God continue to keep and bless the Native Nupe of Lokoja.

May God continue to keep and bless all our peace loving residents of Lokoja.
May God continue to keep and bless His Excellency Alh. Ahmed Usman Ododo and the Government of Kogi State.

Signed

How El-Rufai Dragged Late President Buhari to Court, Criticized His Policies – Group Alleges

Northern based group, Northern Frontiers for Buhari (NFB) has raised allegations about how Former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, betrayed the trust of the late President Muhammadu Buhari through sustained criticism and legal confrontations that, according to a civic group, weakened the cohesion of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement released to the press by Northern Frontiers for Buhari (NFB)and signed by Comrade Murtala Musa Daura, the group alleged that El-Rufai’s relationship with Buhari, once seen as close and politically strategic, degenerated into public opposition, policy defiance, and subtle sabotage—actions they described as acts of betrayal.

“One such example,” the group said, “was when El-Rufai dragged the Federal Government under Buhari to court over issues related to federal appointments and resource control. Legal records show a governor persistently at odds with the central government—even when it was controlled by his own party.”

The group emphasized that this legal resistance came at a time when Buhari’s administration needed unwavering loyalty from state governors to address pressing economic and security challenges. “El-Rufai’s posture was seen by insiders as a deep betrayal that undermined internal party unity,” the statement read.

They also recalled that in 2023, just months before Buhari’s tenure ended, El-Rufai openly condemned the controversial naira redesign policy introduced by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), labeling it “senseless” and “ill-timed.” He blamed Buhari’s economic team for worsening the plight of ordinary Nigerians.

In a defiant move, El-Rufai’s Kaduna State government instructed residents to continue using the old naira notes, in direct opposition to federal directives—a stance widely interpreted as an act of rebellion against the presidency.

“Political watchers saw this not just as resistance to policy but a public rejection of Buhari’s leadership—especially shocking, coming from someone believed to have risen politically through Buhari’s support,” the statement added.

The group further alleged that El-Rufai was part of strategic political meetings that backed individuals within the APC who were critical of Buhari’s inner circle. Citing leaked memos, they claimed El-Rufai once described Buhari as “detached” and “surrounded by incompetent loyalists.”

Although El-Rufai never formally distanced himself from Buhari’s administration, his statements and political maneuvers suggested a calculated effort to reposition himself as Buhari’s influence began to wane.

“From being one of Buhari’s most trusted allies and a pillar in the 2015 APC electoral victory, El-Rufai morphed into a sharp critic and political opportunist. His transformation has been described by many as a textbook case of political betrayal,” the statement concluded.

The group also criticized El-Rufai’s continued political posturing even after Buhari’s passing. “El-Rufai is simply an opportunist who hid under Buhari’s political goodwill to pursue his own ambition. Even in death, Buhari’s legacy is still being trampled on by people like him.”

Custody Confusion Delays Fraud Trial of Alleged Identity Thief

By Margaret Adim

Abuja, Nigeria – July 17, 2025

The much-anticipated prosecution of Sylvanus Enonche Okoh, a suspect in a high-profile identity theft and fraud case, was again delayed on Tuesday after the second defendant failed to appear before a magistrate in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The absence of the accused has stalled court proceedings and heightened concerns over inter-agency coordination among Nigerian law enforcement bodies.

Mr. Okoh, who also goes by the alias Kenneth Ogbogu, is reportedly in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on related charges. However, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) FCT Command, which is leading the prosecution, could not present him before the court due to administrative hurdles and his continued detention by another agency.

Sources within the police say Okoh is also under investigation by the State Intelligence Department (SID) of the FCT Police Command for alleged offenses that include forgery, criminal conspiracy, and identity theft.

A senior police official, speaking anonymously, confirmed that while the police are ready to proceed with prosecution, they are currently awaiting formal cooperation from the EFCC to secure Okoh’s release for arraignment.

“The matter is administrative in nature, but the EFCC’s support is key. We are in the process of aligning efforts so that Mr. Okoh can appear in court without further delays,” the officer said.

This latest postponement is the second time court proceedings have been stalled due to the absence of one or more defendants. Family members of the complainants, who have attended previous court dates expecting justice to be served, expressed frustration over the repeated delays.

“It’s disheartening. We came prepared today expecting to see justice begin its course, only to hear that the suspect is still not here,” said a relative of one of the victims. “We fear this may be a tactic to wear us down or allow the case to quietly disappear.”

Observers following the case say this delay underscores broader systemic issues within Nigeria’s justice system—particularly in how law enforcement agencies handle shared responsibilities in complex cases involving multiple suspects and overlapping jurisdictions.

Legal analyst and anti-corruption advocate Barr. Adaku Onuoha emphasized the need for institutional reform. “This case shows once again how the lack of synergy between law enforcement agencies undermines the fight against financial crimes,” she told TruthNigeria. “The suspect is in custody; that should make arraignment easier, not harder.”

While the EFCC declined to comment officially on the matter, a source within the agency acknowledged that discussions were ongoing regarding the appropriate timing and jurisdiction for Okoh’s arraignment.

Meanwhile, the Police remain tight-lipped on when the next court session will be scheduled. However, they reiterated their commitment to ensuring the suspect is brought before a magistrate as soon as inter-agency clearance is obtained.

As public interest in the case grows, so too does pressure on Nigerian authorities to demonstrate transparency, cooperation, and urgency in handling cases of financial crimes that directly impact individuals and businesses.

The court is now expected to reconvene once formal arrangements are concluded between the EFCC and the Nigeria Police Force. Until then, the complainants and the general public wait anxiously for justice to take its course.

Delta Students’ Global Victory in Qatar: A Beacon of Hope for Nigeria’s Youths — Comrade Gbenga Fajoye

By Mike Odeh James

Comrade Gbenga Fajoye, the Chairman of the Unemployed Youths Association of Nigeria (UYAN), Delta State Chapter, alongside Comr Chuba Okpuzor has congratulated the Nigerian team — comprised entirely of Delta State students — for emerging champions at the World Schools Debate Championship held recently in Doha, Qatar.

The youth leaders, in a press statement issued in Asaba, hailed the victory as not only a triumph for Delta State but also a bold testament to the intellectual potential of Nigerian youths when given the right platform.

“These students have done what even our most celebrated politicians and athletes sometimes struggle to do — they have put Nigeria on the global map for the right reasons,” said Fajoye. “Their discipline, intellect, and courage speak volumes about the greatness within the Nigerian youth.”

The team, made up of Wisdom Chukwuma (Government College, Ughelli), Otorvo Uyoyou (Alegbo Secondary School, Effurun), Abraham Honour (Okpaka Secondary School), Ikhamateh Splendour (Government Model Secondary School, Asaba), and Alika Daniel (Utagba-Ogbe Grammar School, Kwale), secured a commanding 5–1 aggregate win against top global teams including those from the State of Chicago, USA, and Qatar.

Comrade Fajoye reserved special praise for Miss Ikhamateh Splendour, who was named Overall Best Debater at the championship. “Her recognition as the best in the world proves that with commitment and mentorship, the Nigerian girl-child can rise to heights once thought impossible.” while Comrade Chuba took time to elogise Alika Daniel, who represented Utagba-Ogbe grammar school in kwale, which happens to be his home town, where he hails from, taking the opportunity to encourage all the youths and students of Utagba-Ogbe community and Delta State by extension, to remain focused and resilient, stressing that education still remains a vital route to greatness.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori had earlier congratulated the team through his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, describing their feat as “a shining testament to the Delta Can-Do Spirit” and a validation of the state’s investment in education under the MORE Agenda.

The youth leaders emphasized that this achievement must serve as a rallying point for both government and private stakeholders to invest more in youth development. “It is not enough to clap for these students — we must create thousands more like them through deliberate policy, funding, and mentorship.”

The leaders also issued a passionate appeal to the youths of Dekra community, a region grappling with rising unemployment and social instability, urging them to emulate the victorious students from Delta. “Let this achievement inspire you — not to pick up arms or fall into despair — but to pick up books, seek knowledge, and prove that Dekra too can produce world-class champions.”

He encouraged local leaders in Dekra and other underserved areas to support youth education initiatives, offer mentorship programs, and collaborate with NGOs to create opportunities. “If given the right environment, the youths of Dekra can not only lift their community but also become symbols of hope for the entire nation,” they both declared.

Delta Youth Leaders Urge Youths to Shun Drug Trafficking, Cultism, and Oil BunkeringCall on State Government to Support Skills Training and Job Creation

By Mike Odeh James

As the nation grapples with rising concerns over drug abuse, cultism, and illegal oil bunkering, two youth leaders from Delta State have made a passionate appeal to young people across the region to reject these destructive vices. The call comes on the heels of a widely publicized drug-related arrest recently confirmed by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), following earlier reports by youth advocates and journalists.

Comrade Chuba Okpuzor, the National Political Adviser of the Unemployed Youths of Nigeria (UYAN), and Comrade Gbenga Fajoye, the Delta State Chairman of UYAN, are urging youths in the Niger Delta to “choose the path of dignity, purpose, and productivity” instead of being lured into criminal networks or illicit trades that not only endanger their futures but undermine the development of the entire region.

Speaking during a press briefing in Warri, the duo emphasized that recent events have shown how deep-rooted criminality and impunity can be challenged through responsible activism and fearless reporting — but more importantly, through mass reorientation of the youth population.

“We’ve just come out of a trying period where our credibility was attacked for exposing a drug-related case involving a high-profile family,” said Comrade Okpuzor. “Now that the NDLEA has confirmed that our report was true, we’re using this momentum to refocus the conversation on prevention and youth empowerment. It’s not enough to just expose wrongdoing — we must also build systems and values that steer young people away from these paths.”

Comrade Fajoye echoed this sentiment, warning that drug trafficking, cultism, and oil bunkering are not just criminal offenses but “cancers that continue to eat away at the soul of Delta State and Nigeria as a whole.”

“These vices offer quick rewards but leave behind a trail of destruction,” he said. “The arrest of a prominent figure’s relative should serve as a wake-up call — that no one is untouchable and that the law will catch up with those involved in such acts. But more importantly, it should prompt our young brothers and sisters to ask: Is it worth it?”

A Call for Government Partnership

Beyond the warnings and condemnation, both leaders are calling on the Delta State Government to actively partner with youth-focused organizations such as UYAN to develop comprehensive training programs aimed at equipping young people with skills for self-employment.

They stressed that many of the youths drawn into criminal activities are not inherently bad but are victims of systemic neglect, unemployment, and lack of opportunity.

“We need to move from condemnation to creation,” said Comrade Fajoye. “Our youths are talented, energetic, and full of ideas. What they lack is the platform and support to turn those ideas into sustainable livelihoods.”

The leaders proposed collaborative efforts between the government, civil society, and the private sector to fund skill acquisition centers, create entrepreneurship hubs, and support agricultural and technology-based ventures that can absorb the growing number of jobless youths in the state.

“Let’s invest in people instead of just infrastructure. Let’s build future leaders, not future convicts,” Comrade Okpuzor added.

Rehabilitating Hope, Restoring Accountability

UYAN has already started rolling out community engagement programs in parts of Delta State to raise awareness about the dangers of drug use and criminal involvement. Through town hall meetings, school sensitization campaigns, and media outreach, the group is working to rewrite the narrative that the only way to success is through shortcuts and illegality.

The group is also advocating for stronger collaborations between law enforcement and community leaders to tackle cultism and organized drug rings operating in urban and riverine areas.

“We must move away from reactive policing to proactive prevention,” Fajoye emphasized. “When communities feel ownership of the anti-drug campaign, the results are far more lasting.”

Youth Inclusion, Not Youth Abandonment

The duo concluded by reminding the public that youth involvement in nation-building must go beyond rhetoric. They called on policymakers to stop using young people as “political thugs during elections and statistics afterward.”

“Delta’s youths deserve better,” said Okpuzor. “They need to be part of the planning table, not just the receiving end of empty promises. If we don’t engage them positively, someone else — usually a criminal network — will.”

In a final message to the state’s youth, both leaders encouraged their peers to resist peer pressure, stay focused, and reach out for support whenever necessary.

“There is no shame in seeking help,” said Comrade Fajoye. “But there is great danger in silence and inaction. We are here, and we will walk with any young person who wants to change.”

As the region recovers from the shock of recent arrests and looks ahead to 2027 and beyond, these voices of conscience are becoming increasingly vital in building a society where youth are not pawns in a broken system — but pioneers of a brighter future.

When Truth Prevails: Youth Advocates and Journalists Justified as NDLEA Confirms Drug Arrest

By Mike Odeh James

In a society where truth is often obscured by power and fear, genuine activism and fearless journalism remain the last strongholds of accountability. Recently, I, Comrade Chuba Okpuzor, in collaboration with Comrade Gbenga Fajoye, the Delta State Chairman of the Unemployed Youths of Nigeria (UYAN), released a hard-hitting report that reverberated across the country — especially in the Niger Delta. Our report exposed that the brother of a high-ranking individual, Chief Ayiri Emami, had been apprehended in connection with illegal drugs.

The fallout was immediate and intense.

From accusations of political mischief to claims of defamation, our work was met with suspicion and hostility. Many dismissed the findings as fabricated or driven by ulterior motives. Personally, I endured a barrage of insults, many hurled in private messages by those unwilling to believe or too quick to attack. Nevertheless, amid the storm of criticism, we stood our ground — guided by the principle that truth, though often resisted, always comes to

light.

That light has now come.

In a decisive update, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has officially confirmed the arrest and detailed the situation surrounding the case. This confirmation not only strengthens the credibility of our initial reporting, but it also sends a clear message: Activism and journalism, when grounded in integrity, are vital forces for justice and societal reform.

This moment is not simply a personal vindication for myself or Comrade Fajoye. It is a triumph for youth advocacy, civic accountability, and the critical role of investigative journalism in a democratic society. It is a statement that speaking uncomfortable truths — even at great personal cost — is never wasted effort.

Despite attempts to silence our voices — including social media takedowns and online harassment — we remained resolute. We knew the story was not just about narcotics or criminal allegations. It was a deeper struggle over who controls the narrative, and whether ordinary citizens still have the power to challenge the influential without being crushed.

To those who doubted our intentions: healthy skepticism is essential in a democracy. But this episode should be a reminder that facts, when supported by evidence, will eventually pierce through propaganda and denial. Truth may take time, but it is never powerless.

Let this development also serve as a rallying cry to every journalist, youth leader, activist, and civil society organization: stay the course. Ask the hard questions. Dig deeper. Stand firm even when the ground beneath you shakes — because the stories that rattle the powerful are usually the ones that matter most.

Ultimately, this case isn’t just about a confirmed arrest. It is about bravery in the face of backlash, about standing firm when your credibility is questioned, and about protecting the future of a nation whose youth are increasingly vulnerable to the failings of leadership, justice, and governance.

Let us not forget that silence benefits only the oppressor. But a collective voice — driven by truth and united by purpose — can tear down even the most fortified walls of deceit.

National Honour: Group Faults Dangiwa Umar Over Military Officers’ Inclusion in June 12 Struggle

A pro-democracy group under the aegis of the June 12 Ibadan Alliance for Democracy has faulted former Military Governor of Kaduna State, Colonel Abubakar Dangiwa Umar (rtd), over his recent suggestion that several of his military colleagues be considered for national honours for their roles in the June 12, 1993 struggle.

In a statement personally signed by Col. Umar, following his recent conferment with the national honour of Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the retired officer had called on the federal government to also recognise “38 or more” unnamed ex-military officers whom he described as “unsung heroes” of the democratic struggle.

However, the June 12 Alliance, in a press release issued and signed by its National Coordinator, Comrade Arisekola Abdulwahab, strongly disagreed with Col. Umar’s recommendation.

The group accused some of the officers mentioned of fraternising with the late General Sani Abacha and playing roles that ran contrary to democratic ideals.

“We appreciate Col. Dangiwa Umar for accepting the national honour and we acknowledge his outstanding role in defending the sanctity of June 12 despite being in military uniform,” the group said. “However, it is unacceptable to recommend for honours those military officers who were part of the machinery that frustrated and truncated Nigeria’s democratic aspirations.”

The group insisted that while Umar’s own contributions to the pro-democracy movement are undeniable and deserving of national recognition, “those of his colleagues, particularly those who hobnobbed with anti-democratic forces, should not be rewarded.”

“For the benefit of younger generations who may not know the history, honouring such officers would wrongly present them as champions of democracy. That would be a distortion of history,” the statement added.

The group concluded by urging President Tinubu and the National Honours Committee to be cautious in selecting future recipients, stressing that “national recognition should only go to individuals with verifiable contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey.”
